Summerlyn Powers

The Hive

Review by Gary Hill

This EP features an intriguing blend of sounds. There is a country element at play for certain, but many times that's strictly because of the vocals. Summerlyn Powers' voice is pleasant and effective. The music leans toward mainstream rock and pop sounds but also works in folk music directions. This is a solid release of entertaining tracks. I have to say that the lack of apostrophes on the titles of a couple songs heavily annoys me as an editor, but I've left them as they are printed on the sleeve.

Track by Track Review
The Hive
I dig the rocking groove to this. It has some country in the vocal department, but overall this is more of a mainstream pop rock song. It has some great hooks to it.
Always on My Mind
There is a mellower rock vibe here, with a real classic vibe. While the vocals bring some country angles, there are some instrumental hints on this one, too.
Healing Like I Am
This is a balladic piece. I would say that this is more of a folk music number. It has some country leanings, but perhaps less than some of the rest. It's definitely roots music, though.
Nana & Papas House
I like this song a lot. It's probably the most country music based thing here, but it's also magical. It's more of a balladic number.
Lets Roll
This bluesy rocker has plenty of country music built into it. It's a real powerhouse. I would consider it to be one of the highlights here.
