 Ginger Baker's Air Force
 What A Day Beatclub 1970 DVD/CD
 Review by Gary Hill

This band was the outfit Ginger Baker put together shortly after Blind Faith broke up. Rather than go with a power-trio concept like Cream or even a more bluesy rock based band like Blind Faith, Baker opted to do a large band that would create innovative jazz rock. I think this qualifies as progressive rock, really. The music is so strong, and every musician on the stage is great.
These performances were recorded for TV, so the video and audio quality are good. Apparently the version that aired on TV was released before, but this one includes that and some alternate takes that didn’t make it onto screens. There is some weird studio confusion and behind the scenes stuff at one point, too. Personally, I think they could have trimmed that.
The music here is so strong. The backdrop and general look of the stage screams late 60s, early 70s. I really love how they do some Cream songs, but turn them into jazz rock pieces. I also love the fact that we get both the DVD and a CD of the audio.
