Overkill

I was lucky enough to catch Overkill on their headlining tour for Scorched last year. Never ones to rest, the band continued their tour in support of Scorched by being the opening act for King Diamond.

| While they didn’t get a lot of stage time, they worked their magic for a short eight-song set. Making sure you knew they are not a heritage act, they opened with the title track off their newest record. Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth has lost none of the ferocity in his vocals as he spit out every lyric to this new material. As always, it was great to see D.D. Verni alongside Ellsworth being that he recently had shoulder surgery and missed some tour dates. The other new track “The Surgeon” proved that there is plenty of gas in the Overkill tank after 40 years. |

| Speaking of 40 years, the band took the opportunity to go all the way back to their first E.P. (and later their first full length record) for “Rotten to the Core.” Even after all these years, the song (and band) still has that same anger and fire with the crowd eating up every note. Since this was a seated venue, I’m sure many of the fans wished they could have started a mosh pit going during Overkills’ set. Other tunes like “Elimination” and the title track form Ironbound continue to be a part of their show. It just wouldn’t be an Overkill concert without “Hello From the Gutter.” I remember when this was on “MTV Headbanger’s Ball”and thinking that the flying mascot was the coolest thing ever. The guys ended their portion of the night with their take on classic punk tune “F**k You.” The Houston crowd lapped up every note of Overkill’s set, and I’m sure that many in the crowd (along with me) wished that they had more time on stage. Overkill always delivers, and this truncated set was no different. |
