On the Dancefloor with a Twist Again

Review by Gary Hill

Bear Family is big on putting out these various artists kinds of collections. This one is so much fun. There is only one track here that doesn’t really work for me. There is another that does seem like it goes on a bit too long, but when you are listening to it, you don’t really feel that way. However, more than 20 minutes devoted to one fairly basic instrumental seems excessive. All in all, though, this is such an entertaining disc from start to finish, with a decent range of styles and sounds.

This review is available in book (paperback and hardcover) form in Music Street Journal: 2025  Volume 1. More information and purchase links can be found at: garyhillauthor.com/Music-Street-Journal-2025.
Track by Track Review
Louis Prima With Sam Butera And The Witnesses – Better Twist Now Baby

I absolutely love the swinging, jazzy groove on this number. It’s a real big band kind of thing that just rocks like crazy. This is such a great way to start the set in style.

Keely Smith – Twistin' The Night Away

While this track also has a lot of jazz in the mix, it feels more along the lines of contemporary pop music.

Wild Jimmy Spruill – Scratch N' Twist

Instrumental rock and roll with jazz vibes, this is a powerhouse tune. It has some surf guitar vibes at play.

Linda Hopkins – Mama's Doin' The Twist

R&B mixes with rock and roll here. This is a cool tune.

Daaron Lee – Everybody's Twisting

This old school rock and roller is so much fun.

Billy Adams – Memphis Twist

More of a straight rock and roller, I dig the bass and piano on this a lot.

Phil Baugh – Bumble Twist

This instrumental has a real surf guitar sound build into it.

Chuck Dallis – Moon Twist

More of a rockabilly tune, this has a great groove and energy to it.

Hank Ballard And The Midnighters – Do You Know How To Twist

With some doo wop backing vocals, this is a fun romp.

The Isley Brothers – Twist And Shout

This classic stomper works so well. It’s definitely a highlight of the set.

Clay Cole – Twist Around The Clock

An unusual and unique old-time rock and roller, this is cool stuff, but not a highlight for me.

Howie Casey And The Seniors – Twist At The Top

I love the energy and vibe of this song. There is some killer guitar work, especially on the solo. The bass really rocks, and the horns are a nice touch. This is another standout.

Tony Sheridan And The Beat Brothers – Let's Twist Again

Here is another tasty groove. The saxophone brings something special to it. The whole tune really works well.

The Marvelettes – Twistin' Postman

I really love the vocal arrangement on this track. The whole instrumental vibe works so well.

Smokey Smothers - Twist With Me Annie

I like the harmonica on this. There is a bit of a garage band sound here mixed with down-home blues.

The Sprouts – Twisting On Bandstand

Sort of more along the lines of energized pop of the time, this does have a cool guitar solo along with a blowing sax solo. It’s actually a fun romp, but the vocals seem a little too “vanilla” for my tastes. Still, this is fun.

Dick Dale And His Del-Tones – Miserlou Twist

I love surf guitar music, and Dick Dale was one of the best at the game. This tune really shines.

Connie Francis – Mr. Twister

While the vocal performance is exactly what you expect from Connie Francis, this rock and rolling tune rocks more than her standard sound.

Hank Ballard & The Midnighters – Miss Twister

A soulful sort of rock and roll groove really serves this tune well. It’s a fun romp.

Cajun Trio – Cajun Twist

Here get what you’d expect, a Cajun styled tune. This doesn’t work as well for me as some of the others do. In fact, I’d consider this the low point of the album, and the one track I’d probably skip.

Freddy King – The Bossa Nova Watusi Twist

This instrumental has some killer guitar work built into it.

Paul Livert And The Lions – Chicken Twist - Part II

At over 20-minutes of music, this is the longest track here, and it’s not even close. The jamming on this thing is positively on fire. It has rock and roll and jazz both at play. It turns pretty rocking as it continues driving forward.

Robby Lawrence – The Twist To End All Twists

This is another fun romp. While it’s not really a standout, it does tend to bring things back down to Earth after that extended instrumental piece.
