Look Inside - solo bass

Review by Gary Hill

I really wanted to cover this release, but it’s hard to review. That’s because everything here is played on a double bass, exclusively. That means it’s hard to differentiate the tracks, and it’s not for everyone. There is some great playing on this disc, though. As a bass guitar player I can probably appreciate this more than some people can, but there is something to like about this in general. It is just not that well-suited for reviews, and particularly a track by track review.

This review is available in book (paperback and hardcover) form in Music Street Journal: 2025  Volume 1. More information and purchase links can be found at: garyhillauthor.com/Music-Street-Journal-2025.
Track by Track Review
Island Pathways

This is mellow and understated, but it also has a good energy and drive to it. It’s one of the shorter pieces here.

Kansala - Nardis

While this is much longer than the opener, it’s not a big departure musically. It’s another solid cut.

Chennai Reminiscence

There is a darker, dangerous vibe to this at times. It seems to have almost a movie soundtrack element at points.

A Minor Excursion

I like the groove that gets this going.

Prelude to a Kiss

There is a sense of drama to the cut.

Gyrating Spheres

I like the almost stabbing feeling to some of the lines of bass on this number. It works out from there in different directions and turns percussive for a time. There is a more energized movement further down the road.

A Space in Between

While not any kind of big reinvention, this works well.

June Poem

Somehow this feels more reflective at times.

My Man’s Gone Now

More effective bass work is on the menu here.

Ode to Spring

This has some great fast playing built into it.

Stillness - Epilogue

Not any kind of big departure, this is another equally effective track.
