Jon Durant

Momentarily

Review by Gary Hill

Like the other sets from Jon Durant I’ve reviewed, I have put this under progressive rock. Like those, this is instrumental music that grows slowly. It’s definitely art music. It’s also compelling and potent. This fits well with his catalog. It’s a strong release from start to finish, but it all leans toward mellower, slower moving, textural stuff. There are peaks and valleys, though.

Track by Track Review
In A Moment

Trippy effects driven stuff brings us in here. This evolves gradually with a bit of funk and some jazzy things joining. There is an ambient element at play as it continues to grow. Eventually this takes on some psychedelic things. This is an intriguing instrumental number.

Bitter Wind

There is sort of a mysterious vibe to this cut. It has jazz along with ambient sound built into it. The bass sound on this is so cool.

Not Aways Raining

Not a big change, this is another cool, rather ambient musical journey.

Raki

I really love the rhythm section on this. The cut has some world music elements and a lot of drama. Yet, at its core it’s not  a huge change.

Rockets On Kyiv

At nearly 11-and-a-half minutes long, this is the epic of the album. It has quite a bit of dynamic range and growth. It’s a classy track that works well. It seems to convey a lot of different moods and tones. It is the strongest piece on the set. That said, it’s not a huge departure. The percussion on this really does stand out more than that on other tracks, though.

For A Moment

There are some particularly effective melodic vibes over the top of the backdrop on this track. That makes this one of the best numbers here.
