Bai Kamara Jr. & The Voodoo Sniffers

Traveling Medicine Man

Review by Gary Hill
I’ve seen Bai Kamara Jr.’s music described as “afro blues.” That just seems like a really weird label to me. I mean, blues is a decidedly African musical style, having originated with enslaved Africans in the US. I clearly don’t disagree with this music being called “blues.” That label fits pretty much everything here. There is also a healthy helping of jazzy, fusion sound, other roots music and more. While there is a decent dynamic range, it all leans on the mellower end of the spectrum. This is all high quality music that works really well, no matter how you label it. I like it from start to finish.

Track by Track Review
Shake It, Shake It, Shake It

There is a funny, nearly jazzy groove to this piece.

Surrounded

A little more on the subdued side, this tune is all class.

Good, Good Man

This is more of an acoustic blues romp. It’s very stripped back, but also very tasty.

If You Go

While still mellow, this has a more complete arrangement. It’s also another classy piece of music.

Miranda Blue

Here we get more of a driving electric blues tune.

Money Ain't Everything

This has plenty of blues along with more jazzy textures in the mix here. It’s a great smooth groove.

Enemies

I love the slow groove on this track. It has plenty of fusion-like vibes, but also a lot of blues here. This is one of my favorite tracks on the whole album.

Star Angel

Here we get another blues tune. This another standout cut.

Mister President

There is a nearly reggae based vibe at play on this tune.

I Don't Roll With Snakes

Here we get another blues based tune. This has a rocking vibe built into it. It’s all class.

I'm A Grown Man

This bluesy tune really has some great rocking grooves. It’s another standout here.

It Ain't Easy A

A bluesy rocker, this is classy stuff.

If I Could Walk On Water
Not a big change, this is just another effective piece of music.
