That’ll Flat Git It! Vol. 42

Review by Gary Hill
I have reviewed quite a few of this series, and there is a decent range of music from one collection to another. This set gathers up songs from King and Federal record labels. It leans pretty heavily on old school rock and roll and rockabilly. I think, as such, it’s fairly effective, but a lot of the music is just middle-of-the-road in terms of quality. Still, for me, this one works pretty well because it’s closer to aligned with my tastes.

This review is available in book (paperback and hardcover) form in Music Street Journal: 2024  Volume 4. More information and purchase links can be found at: garyhillauthor.com/Music-Street-Journal-2024.
Track by Track Review
Cecil McNabb Jr. – Clock Tickin' Rhythm
This vintage rocker has some great energy and grooves. It’s a driving hot tune that features some killer piano work.
Delbert Barker – No Good - Robin Hood
There is more of a rockabilly vibe to this along with some hints of jazz. It’s a classy tune, but not as intense as the opener was.
Mac Curtis – Say So
I really dig the guitar solo on this rocker. It’s another suitably old-school rockabilly number.
Donnie White – Your Kind Of Lovin'
The guitar riffing and piano on this both work well for me. I’m not as crazy about the vocal performance, but this is still effective. It’s nothing all that original, but it works well.
Charlie Feathers – One Hand Loose
The guitar sound on this really sells the track for me. The soloing is the icing on the cake.
Hank Mizell – Jungle Rock
The energy on this is good, but the song doesn’t really work that well for me.
Ronnie Wade – Annie, Don't Work
The backing vocals lean toward doo wop. The guitar jamming on this is strong, but I’m not really a fan of this track.
Trini Lopez – Rock On
I don’t care for the backing vocals on this tune, but the piano and groove really work well. Those things manage to really elevate the piece.
Bob & Lucille – Eeny-Meeny-Miney-Moe
The female vocals on this are great. The whole tune grooves with vintage style and charm.
Bob Newman– Haulin' Freight
The piano is the best thing going here. This rockabilly tune isn’t really a standout for me.
Bill Beach – You're Gonna Like My Baby
This rocker and roller isn’t any kind of big revelation, but it works well enough.
The Bon-Aires – Stop The World (Guitar Version)
I really love the guitar soloing on this thing. The tune has some killer jamming.
Boyd Bennett And His Rockets – You Upset Me Baby
I like the jazzy groove the horns bring to this. The backing vocals take a little away from it for me. Overall, though, this provides some variety and does it with style.
Moon Mullican – I'm Mad With You
This track has a real swinging vibe to it. This has a real rural vibe. I like the piano work a lot.
Joe Penny – Bip A Little, Bop A Lot
High energy vintage rock and roll is on the menu here. This is a standout track on the set.
Charlie Feathers – Nobody's Woman
This has a rockabilly vibe, and doesn’t do that much for me. Your mileage may vary.
Mac Curtis – If I Had Me A Woman
I did the classy rock and roll on this tune quite a bit. This is just a fun romp.
Rusty York – Shake 'Em Up Baby
Here we get a swinging, rocking tune that’s playful and fun.
Hardrock Gunter – I'll Give 'Em Rhythm
This tune alternates between deep down country music and some definite jazzy stuff. While the more hillbilly stuff doesn’t work for me, I do like the artistry of combining these two sounds into one track.
Dave Dudley – Rock And Roll Nursery Rhyme
There is a healthy helping of jazz along with rock and roll in the mix here. This is one of my favorites of the set.
Wayne Carroll – Chicken Out
I love this bouncy rocking groove. The saxophone solo is a high point of the tune for me.
Ken McDonald – Good, Good, Good
Another classy rock and roller, this is catchy and has a good energy to it.
Boyd Bennett And His Rockets – Put The Chain On The Door
Here we get another fun romp. I really like the guitar soloing on this one a lot.
Mac Curtis – Don't You Love Me
While this isn’t any kind of revelation, it works well.
Fuller Todd – Top Ten Rock
This old-time rock and roller includes some smoking hot guitar work.
Trini Lopez – Yes You Do
Not a standout this is a solid number nonetheless.
The Town Three feat. Wes Voight – Midnight Blues
This is another solid vintage rock and roller.
Moon Mullican – Rock 'n' Roll Mr. Bullfrog
This rockabilly romp has plenty of country music in the mix, but it also includes some definite jazz and blues leanings. This is one of the stronger tunes here for me.
Bruce Channel – Slow Down Baby
Here we get another energetic rock and roller. I dig the guitar work, but the doo wop vocals are definitely a detriment for me.
Luke McDaniel – One More Heart
This has a lot of country sound in the mix. It’s a mellower romp that works pretty well. There is some Hawaiian sounding guitar soloing mid-track.
