Jack Bruce

Rockpalast: The 50th Birthday Concerts DVD Set

Review by Gary Hill

It would be easy for a cynical person to assume that this was some hastily assembled set to cash in after the death of Jack Bruce. That’s definitely not the case. This release is extremely classy and good. This set was filmed in 1993. Bruce had invited a number of his musical friends to paly with him to celebrate his 50th birthday. Given the tumultuous relationship the two had, it seems hard to believe that Ginger Baker was there, but he was one of the drummers. So was Simon Phillips. The other musicians included Clem Clempson and Gary Moore (guitar) and Bernie Worrell and Gary Husband (keyboards). This is an incredible concert covering a wide range of genre. Of course, the bass playing is top-notch, but so is everything else. I can not recommend this enough.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2015  Volume 1 at lulu.com/strangesound.
