Solitude Aeturnus
Hour of Despair DVD

This DVD brings a new, visual dimension the music of one of the masters of doom metal. Solitude Aeturnus’ particular flavor of doom resonates extremely well with me and it’s cool to get to experience their live show for the first time. Fans of old school Black Sabbath and such bands as Candlemass should really enjoy Solitude Aeturnus a lot. These guys are heavy as lead boots, but also have some incredibly tasty riffs. The main concert video is a good one, with good (but not always great) video and very good sound. If it were the only thing included here this would be worth having, but it’s not. Also included on this DVD is an interview segment and two bootleg concert videos. From my perspective I’d say that the first of these is bad to the point of really only being worthwhile as a “watch it once” experience. I’m sure the performance is fine, but the video and audio are bad enough that I wouldn’t even consider trading something for it. The second one is definitely better in quality and worth having. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not pro quality by any leap of the imagination, but it’s definitely better than the first – and quite watchable. You also get a photo gallery, band history, discography and weblinks. All in all this is a top notch package bringing a new dimension to one of the better bands of the doom metal scene. Now that Solitude Aeturnus’ lead singer Robert Lowe is also the vocalist in Candlemass it presents a great opportunity for all the Candlemass fans out there to get a glimpse at his other band.
