The Pee Wee Blues Gang

Playing Funky - the Lost Album

Review by Gary Hill

Given the name of the group, I expected a lot more blues. That said, this is not a disappointment. It’s just not what I expected. This is more classic rock oriented, but there is quite a bit of range within that general territory. However you slice it, though, this is quite a special set.

Track by Track Review
One Only Women
There’s a garage band meets old school bluesy rock and psychedelia texture to this. It’s a great tune. The production in retrospect is a little flat, though. I’m reminded just a bit of Nazareth on this at times. The guitar solo sections are quite tasty.
Baby Please Please
As tasty as the opener was, this is on a whole different level. It reminds me of a cross between The Animals and BB King. It’s a killer, slow blues jam that’s got a lot of soul and power built into it. The keyboards really shine on this one.
Down-Healed Blues

This is much more of a pure blues tune. It starts with a down home, pretty basic and mellow blues jam. Then they power it out into a killer electric twelve bar blues.

Sweet Mary-Anne

Set more in a classic rock, Southern rock style, in some ways this reminds me a bit of “Freebird.” It’s a good tune. It’s a nice bit of variety, too.

Boogie Child

Classic rock merges with energetic soul on this rocker. The saxophone lends a lot to the mix and this feels very much like the type of music that was all over the radio in the 1970s. There are a couple false endings along with reprises, too.

My Summer Sun

This is a pretty basic old time rock and roller. It’s not a bad song. It’s just not unique.

Can You Hear My Thunder

A classy hard rocker, this is classic and cool. It’s one of the best tunes here. I like it a lot.

Love Is Jealousy

Starting like more of a pure blues number, this resolves into one of the more standard classic rock styled tunes of the set.

Playing Funky
This is a killer blues rocker. It’s classic and tasty.
Got All The Meanness Back In Me
Another straight ahead rocker, this is bluesy and fun.
