That'll Flat Git It Vol. 46: Rockabilly & Rock 'n' Roll From The Vaults Of Chess Records

Review by Gary Hill

Another in this extensive series of vintage music collections. I like this one more than some of the others in the run. I think it's probably because the type of rock presented here is more in line with my musical tastes. There is quite a healthy assortment of music here. That's for sure.

Track by Track Review
Dale Hawkins - Four Letter Word (Rock)
Rockabilly and rock and roll with some hints of jazz is on the menu here. This is a cool romp that is so much fun. It's a good way to start things in style.
The Galaxies - This Rock and Roll

This has a bit of a novelty vibe to it. The bass starts things, and they fire out into some energetic rock and roll.

Ray Stanley - I Can't Wait

Still in the old school rock and roll zone, this groove is different, but also quite fun.

Bobby Dean - Dime Store Pony Tail

More the kind of thing you expect here, this has some killer saxophone wailing and a great groove.

Rod Bernard - Pardon Mr. Gordon

This is an entertaining romp. The lyrics are pretty funny, and the song really rocks. It has some tastefully silly moments.

Bobby Charles - Take It Easy Greasy

I love this rocking groove. The piano and saxophone are both on fire. This one really stands tall on the set. It is so fierce in a 50s rock and roll way.

Terry & the Pirates - What Did He Say

A solid, but rather forgettable rock and roller, this is entertaining.

Steve Alaimo & the Red Coats - She's My Baby

Bass gets us going and holds a lot of the track. This has a cool, dramatic, but understated sound. It has a real garage rock kind of vibe.

Jackie Cannon - Proof of Your Love

The guitar on this has almost a surf sound, but the number is more of a pure rock and roller. It's another entertaining track.

Dale Hawkins - Take My Heart

There is much more of a rockabilly sound on this one. It doesn't work as well for me as some of the other do.

Freddy Fender - You're Something Else for Me

This is rocker has some rockabilly in the mix. It reminds me of something Jerry Lee Lewis might do in some ways.

Tony March - Cousin Rockin' Roll Blues

More of a doo wop styled vibe is all over this song. The lyrics to this seem pretty cringey.

Jack Ford - That's All You Gotta Do

This rockabilly number is classy. It's not really my kind of thing, though.

Bobby Charles - Watch It Sprocket

I really dig this rocking groove to so much. The horns and piano add a lot of charm, and the whole track grooves with style.

Bobby Tuggle - The $64.000 Question

Here we have more old school rock and roll. This is fun stuff.

Billy Barrix - Cool Off Baby (Alt. Take)

The rockabilly grooving on this romp is classy. I like this one quite a bit.

Bobby Dean - Go Mr. Dillon

This has so much energy. It's a fun old school rocking groove. It's one of the standouts on the album.

Gene Simmons - Going Back to Memphis

No, this isn't "that" Gene Simmons. There is a slow blues grind here with a some hints of country music in the mix along with rock and roll.

Terry & the Pirates - Talk About the Girl

This rock and roller is so much fun. It's a killer tune that has so much magic and charm built into it.

Bobby Charles - No More (I Ain't Gonna Leave You No More)

Another rocking romp, this works pretty well. I love the saxophone on the track and the bass work.

Dale Hawkins - See You Soon Baboon

A Tarzan yell starts us off here and also ends the song. They take it out into a bouncy rocker from there. This is fun stuff, but not a standout.

The Kents - I Found My Girl

With some killer piano and saxophone built into it, this rocker is a fun one.

Dick Glasser - Make Believe Wedding Bells

A bouncy little rock and roller, this is entertaining, but not a standout. I'm not crazy about the vocals on this at all.

Ray Stanley - Over a Coke

I like the guitar on this track a lot. It's a solid number that works pretty well.

The Galaxies - 6:15

This surf guitar instrumental is so much fun. It has some killer saxophone wailing and really rocks.

Bobby Dean - I Am Ready

Jazz and rock and roll merge on this romp. It's another entertaining one.

Billy Miranda - Run Rose

This is a driving old-school rock and roller. It works pretty well. It really does have a lot of raw energy.

Bette Laine - Rock-A-Bye Rock

I'm not overly crazy about the backing vocals on this. They are too "doo wop" for my tastes, but the song in general works well. The lead vocals are strong, too.

Don & Bob - Good Morning, Little Schoolgirl

Another with some cringey lyrics, this rocker is pretty effective beyond that.

Big Al Downing - The Story of My Life

I like this romp alright, but it's far from a standout. It's more of a soul tune than a rock and roller.

Chuck Berry - Beautiful Delilah (Alt. Takes 15/16)

This alternate take from Chuck Berry is a cool rock and roller. It a good energy and style. It's 15 and 16 because there is a little thing at the beginning where they say, "take 15....16 now.".

J. C. Hill - So Long - Goodbye

I like this rock and roller a lot. It's a killer romp with a cool groove. Surprisingly it sounds a little like Chuck Berry to me. There is some cool saxophone in the mix. The recording sounds  little weird, though, like there might be some kind of mild tape issue.

Dickie & the Gee's - Baby Bye, Bye

This romp isn't a big change, or a standout of any kind, but it works reasonably well.
