Hawkwind

Zarazinia 12 inch Single (Vinyl)

Review by Gary Hill

For a long time we didn’t do reviews of out of print items at Music Street Journal. Well, more recently I’ve changed that stance. I mean between Amazon and eBay it seems like most items are pretty easy to obtain any more – and often without a huge cash outlay. So, I’ve been going through and reviewing some of my old oddities, like this 12 inch single. For my money the real gems here are the two live tracks on the B-side. Don’t get me wrong, “Zarazinia” is a good tune, but it’s available on album. These live songs are real rarities and quite good. It should be mentioned that since I reviewed that song with the album it was released on, I’ve adapted that review for use here for the sake of consistency.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2014  Volume 2 at lulu.com/strangesound.

Track by Track Review
Side One
Zarozinia
“Zarozinia” is a keyboard driven ballad. This is a beautiful cut that is quite dramatic. It’s one  of my favorites from the Chronicle of the Black Sword disc. It is classic Hawkwind.
Side Two
Assault & Battery
There is quite an extended mellow introduction here before the familiar melodies emerge. Then the bass enters and the cut starts to really rock from there. This live version is very strong. They rock out the familiar sounds and the sound is great. I love the guitar soloing on thing. It, like the next number, was recorded live at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1985. It segues directly into the next number.
Sleep of a 1000 Tears
More of a mainstream rock tune, this is another strong one. It drops down mid-track to a mellower jam. The guitar and drum sounds seem to play off one another quite well as the instrumental jam comes back up. This is quite an inspired bit of music. It works back out into the song proper before they take it out.
