Progressive Rock CD Reviews
Aline's étoile magique - éclipse // elastic
Review by Gary Hill
This album is much easier to listen to than it is to define or classify.
Kevin Ayers - Falling Up
Review by Gary Hill
I have to say that if I was basing classification strictly on the musical style, it's unlikely this would have landed under prog.
Barclay James Harvest - Baby James Harvest 4CD/Blu-ray Edition
Review by Gary Hill
This 1972 album from Barclay James Harvest gets a major deluxe release here. This set includes four CDs and a Blu-Ray disc.
Doctors of Space - The Astral Sessions Vol 5- Roadburn Redux
Review by Gary Hill
You can't go wrong with projects from Doctor Space. That's the pseudonym used by Scott Heller in his musical projects.
Gayle Ellett & The Electromags - Friends
Review by Gary Hill
This is the second release from this act to across my desk for reviewing. I'm a fan of Gayle Ellett in pretty much every project he's involved with, starting with Djam Karet.
Family - Fearless 3CD Expanded Edition
Review by Gary Hill
The Fearless album, from 1971 saw John Wetton joining Family. It also saw the sound of the group change to some degree.
Fish on Friday - 8mm
Review by Gary Hill
I've previously reviewed two other albums from this act. Their brand of progressive rock does a great job of merging modern and classic prog sounds.
Nick Fletcher - Quadrivium
Review by Gary Hill
This instrumental album features a nice range of sounds.
Fly to the Sun - Fly to the Sun
Review by Gary Hill
This is prog, but perhaps not in the way you might expect.
Hats off Gentlemen It’s Adequate - The Light Of Ancient Mistakes
Review by Gary Hill

I've reviewed a number of releases from this band, and they never fail to deliver compelling progressive rock.

Bob Holz - Holz-Stathis: Collaborative
Review by Gary Hill
I've pretty consistently put Bob Holz releases under progressive rock because that's where we land fusion.
Bob Holz - Holz-Stathis: Collaborative (double vinyl set)
Review by Gary Hill
I've reviewed the CD version of this album in this edition of Music Street Journal, but also want to look at this awesome double record set.
Andy Jackson - Twelve Half Steps
Review by Gary Hill
You just can't go wrong with releases from Andy Jackson. This new album is made up of instrumental pieces built around specific modal scales.
Marillion - Real To Reel
Review by Greg Olma
Marillion was always a band that seemed to do things on their own terms.  For example, the band released this live album after just two studio releases, which was not the norm for bands at the time.

No Fast Food (David Liebman, Drew Gress, and Phil Haynes) - CODA(s)
Review by Gary Hill
This double CD set is intriguing It's all jazz-based, but it's more often than not experimental and freeform. This is probably not quite like anything you've ever heard before.
Poor Genetic Material - Elsewhere
Review by Gary Hill
This ;latest disc from Poor Genetic Material continues their tradition of creating strong progressive rock.
Red32 - Red32
Review by Gary Hill
This act is a crossover prog group. Their self-titled album has a lot of variety.
Renaissance - The Legacy Tour 2022
Review by Gary Hill
This double live CD set from Renaissance captures a show from October of 2022.
Anthony W. Rogers - High Five (vinyl)
Review by Gary Hill
I generally put Anthony W. Rogers under progressive rock, as I did this release. That's because of the experimental, sonically challenging aspect of the music.
William Shatner - Ponder the Mystery Revisited
Review by Gary Hill
This is a remix version of an album that was released in 2013. I really love that original album.
Slow Burning Car - Vicarious Disclosures
Review by Gary Hill
I have liked and reviewed several previous albums from this act. I always put them under progressive rock. I'm doing that here.
Stackridge - Extravaganza 2CD Edition
Review by Gary Hill
One of three double CD sets of Stackridge reissues I'm reviewing in this issue, I think this is more pure prog rock than the others.
Stackridge - Mr. Mick, 2CD Expanded Edition
Review by Gary Hill
Mr. Mick was the final album from the original version of Stackridge. They recorded it as a concept piece, and presented it to their record label.
Stackridge - The Man In The Bowler Hat, 2CD Expanded Edition
Review by Gary Hill
As the title might suggest, this band is a very definitively British act. This was their third album, released in 1974.
Quinn Sternberg - Walking On Eggshells
Review by Gary Hill
I previously reviewed another set from Quinn Sternberg. Like that one, this lands under prog because it's essentially fusion.
Tu-Ner - T1 – Contact Information
Review by Gary Hill
You know you are in for a treat when the lineup of the group is Markus Reuter, Pat Mastelotto and Trey Gunn. You can also figure that the music will be along the lines of King Crimson and Stick Men.
Metal/Prog Metal CD Reviews
Ancient Rites - Dim Carcosa
Review by Gary Hill
This a newly reissued edition of the 2001 album from this Belgian metal act.
Calico Jack - Isla De La Muerte
Review by Gary Hill
I have to admit that this was my first foray into Pirate metal. So, I can't tell you how these guys compare to other bands within the subgenre.
Crimson Dawn - It Came from the Stars / The Open Coffin
Review by Gary Hill
This is a double CD set, but it is basically a single CD with a bonus EP included.
Fist of Five - Sparrow Road
Review by Gary Hill
I have landed this album under heavy metal.
Lemmy - Ultimate Fan Collection
Review by Gary Hill
This is a worthwhile collection, but it has some real issues. Part of that starts with the whole titling aspect.
Non-Prog CD Reviews
Joe Bennett & The Sparkletones - What The Heck! - The Complete Joe Bennett & The Sparkletones
Review by Gary Hill
This collection from Bear Family seems pretty self-explanatory at first.
Sarah Burton - 64 Magic Queens
Review by Gary Hill
On the one hand, there is some range here. On the other, there aren't enough songs that vary things up.
Crying Vessel - Before Life Was Death
Review by Gary Hill
This album has a great retro vibe. Yet, there are also fresh things here.
Andrew Gold - The Fraternal Order of All: Greetings from Planet Love
Review by Gary Hill
This is an intriguing and unique album with a captivating history. It sounds like it could have been released in the heady days of the 1960s.
The Great Kat - Christmas Classical
Review by Gary Hill
The Great Kat seems to always defy expectations. She certainly came to the attention of many, myself included, for her classical-leaning shred guitar playing.
Claire Hamill - A Pocket Full Of Love Songs
Review by Gary Hill
Folk music, jazz and more merge on this album. The sound here is more fully tied to mellower modes of earlier eras.
Ken Hensley - Past And Present (Songs In Time) 1970-2021
Review by Gary Hill
This set is sort of a career-spanning release focused on Ken Hensley. The man was first known for his work with Uriah Heep, but he created quite a catalog of music over the years beyond those origins.
King's X - In The New Age: The Atlantic Recordings 1988-1995
Review by Gary Hill
King's X, in my opinion, is one of the most under-rated bands out there. Their sound is compelling and catchy and yet meaty and quirky.
Neybas - Sunshine Hotel
Review by Gary Hill
These guys advertise themselves as a jam band. I think they are more alternative based than that suggests.
Kostas Patsiotis Quartet - October
Review by Gary Hill
Kostas Patsiotis is responsible for the compositions and arrangements on this album. He also plays the doublebass parts here.
Xiomara Torres - La Voz Del Mar
Review by Gary Hill
With healthy helpings of Latin music, jazz and more, this is an entertaining set that works reasonably well from start to finish.
Unwritten Law - The Hum
Review by Gary Hill
I had not heard this band before. Apparently they are considered punk rock.
Various Artists - On The Dancefloor With A Bop! - 36 Tunes To Bop The Blues Away!
Review by Gary Hill
This various hits collection is pretty effective. While there are some tracks that have some different leanings, overall this is old-school rock and roll.
Various Artists - Santa Barbara Records presents CaliAmericana Vol. 2
Review by Gary Hill
This is a unique release. Each artist here contributed two songs to this collection.
Various Artists - Santa Swings...The Windup: 27 Christmas Stockings Full Of Shellac Dust
Review by Gary Hill
This collection of music from the 1930s and 40s era of jazz focuses on holiday music that's often overlooked in collections like this.
Various Artists - That'll Flat Git It! Vol. 41: Rockabilly & Rock 'n' Roll From The Vaults Of Dot & Hamilton
Review by Gary Hill
This collection from Bear Family features a consistent mix of songs.
Various Artists - The Wanda Jackson Connection
Review by Gary Hill
This is a unique set of songs. It's made up of originals of songs Wanda Jackson covered, and covers of her songs by other artists.
Wellbeloved - The Rusty
Review by Gary Hill
Wellbeloved might sound like it would be the name of a band. It's really the name of the main guy here, David Wellbeloved.
WonderCurrent - WonderCurrent
Review by Gary Hill
This is a duo consisting of Dave Dvorak and J.J. Benson. The music here moves from folk to alternative rock, pop oriented and much more.
DVD/Video Reviews
Dio - Dreamers Never Die - Deluxe Edition DVD/Blu-ray Set
Review by Gary Hill
I can't heap enough praise on this set. Everything about it is top-notch.
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin DVD
Review by Gary Hill
This double DVD set from Led Zeppelin was released 20 years ago. I just heard about it for the first time recently and had to get it.
Little Feat - Highwire Act - Live In St. Louis 2003 Blu-Ray/Double CD Set
Review by Gary Hill
There are Little Feat fans who feel that the band ceased to be Little Feat once Lowell George was gone.
Øresund Space Collective - Helsingør 2021 DVD
Review by Gary Hill
You can’t go wrong with an Øresund Space Collective performance.
