Alice Cooper

Welcome To My Nightmare Special Edition DVD

Review by Gary Hill

I remember having the two features on this DVD as separate VHS tapes years ago. Those tapes are long gone, so to finally have this in my collection again is great.

The first part of this dynamic duo is "Welcome to My Nightmare." It's essentially a concert video, although the intro section of the film is a bit more of a film production that a stage one. While I tend prefer the less "Vegas" style of Alice Cooper's stage shows, this does a great job of capturing that era in all it's over the top glory. The performance is strong and this is just such a cool thing to have again.

The second part is "The Nightmare." This was an Alice Cooper special made for television. Vincent Price shares the stage for much of this extravaganza. It includes a lot of the same material as the concert film (and a lot of similar staging) but done more as a music video. Again, this is great to once again be able to watch.

The only complaint I have is that the whole set is far from modern in terms of video quality. Perhaps this is the quality both parts were recorded in, or maybe the master tapes were lost. Either way, don't expect modern video and audio standards. It's not bad, though. It's just that our expectations are higher now than they were way back when.
