Robert Plant

and the Band of Joy – Live from the Artists Den DVD

Review by Gary Hill

You really have to admire Robert Plant. He doesn’t want to take the easy route. As he even says in one of the interviews on this DVD, he could have just put together a Zeppelin tribute band and brought in crowds and lots of money. There have been huge offers on the table for a reunion of the remaining members of Zeppelin. The easy route would have been for Plant to do one of those things. Instead, he’s taken to rearranging a lot of his songs from his career in a new sound that’s more old rock and roll and roots music mixed with country. He’s assembled a real band to perform those songs (along with new ones from their album). In addition, rather than hogging the spotlight, Plent doesn’t always sing lead, allowing other members of the group to do that. The end result is something that’s definitely not Led Zeppelin, but is organic, compelling and very real. That’s the theme behind the concert captured here. The recording (video and audio) are top notch and this is a quality release from a real artist. The one issue I do have is the fact some of the interview clips are intercut with concert footage. That’s a bit annoying at times and it would have been nice for an option in the menu to play one without the other. Still, this is great despite that little flaw.
