Marillion

The EMI Singles Collection DVD

Review by Greg Olma

I had no idea that Marillion had this many videos. I'm sure that many of these were never shown on MTV so I guess I can be a bit forgiven for being ignorant of these little video treasures.  It's a shame they weren't given a chance on MTV because I think Marillion could have become a bigger band here in the states.  Sure they didn't have the pretty boy looks of Bon Jovi (or the other hair metal bands) but neither did Genesis and they became a household name based on their singles and videos.  Oh well, fair or not, they still managed to rack up a collection of 22 videos that are represented on this DVD.  They range from slightly cheezey to beautifully panoramic.  The earlier Fish era videos have that 80's feel to them which only adds to their charm.  The Hogarth era represents the 90's quite well with more of a subdued pallet of colors along with trying to be more artistic.  All the videos feature the band prominently but they do add stories to them to give you a glimps into the music.  I thought to myself "how often would I really watch these videos?"  Lets face it, videos don't have the same quality of a full length concert so the appeal of re-living a show is not there.  Surprisingly, this DVD is so enjoyable that I have viewed it many times.  To mix things up, you have the option of playing the videos randomly instead of in order giving you a surprise of which video will be next.  There are no real bonuses here but the videos are good enough to make this a worthwhile purchase.
