The Twangshifters

Live in Portland, OR, May 2011

Review by Larry Toering

After the CD release in-store performance earlier that week at Music Millennium, The Twangshifters brought the house down at the Bossanova Ballroom. Their massively out of sight show features the band along with Burlesque Dancers, The Dolly Pops, as well as an entertaining opening Burlesque show, along with another band that night, sales vendors and more. This was a chance to really see them stretch out after the in-store performance, and boy did they put on a show. Talk about fun, it will likely go down as some of the best fun I've had all summer. No kidding, they're than fun to see.

To describe their act it would have to be somewhere between the real rockabilly bands from the 50's and 60's, to more modern acts such as The Reverend Horton Heat. But don't get me wrong, there is a difference between Horton Heat and the Twangshifters, and it starts with more energy and more of an entire band feel. Still, there are similarities, for instance stand up bass player Corvin Blacke might seem to be doing the same act as seen by the Rev, but he just does it much better, if you ask me. And their crowd, although a Rev crowd is amazing in its own right, is also a much more friendly and well relaxed bunch of followers. The whole thing was pleasantly exciting to witness and be a part of.

Vocalist Sara Barry is a sight to behold, she is contender for one of the best female singers I can think of these days, and that includes a lot of bands. She commands the audience with ease and proceeds to stop at nothing to keep their attention. Along with the band on stage are the Dolly Pops, a fun loving bunch of dancing girls to really spice up things and keep everyone on their toes. Guitarist Shaun Toman is another one of the four great talents in this band, he really keeps his axe in great order,  always concentrating but never turning his back, and although he keeps a low profile compared to the rest up there, he is just concentrating on keeping it all together, so he was the sleeper star of the night., and a very humble talent he is.

They blazed through their new CD like they've been doing this all of their lives. Drummer extraordinaire Troy Stutzman, along with Blacke provides the perfect rhythm section, as they rival one another for stage domination. They work together so well it's hard to find such team work these days. As this is no stationary Portland act, they've been up north to Seattle and down south all the way to Orange County since this memorable night in P-town. So be prepared for them to be around for a long time. They really bring on a full money's worth show and then some, as they're managed by the Rose City Rebel herself, Melony Rock 'n Roll Ruby, a very well known act around town herself who plays a hugely supportive role in it all.

A spectacular night was had by all, and it's one of those things you have to be there to fully appreciate, and I certainly did and will continue to do so as a supporter myself. I'm not that easy to hold down as a varied music fan, but the Twangshifters are one of a handful of local bands I do find time to get out and see. They are as good as any of them, but with their sights on bigger things than just playing locally. Get out to see them, you won't be sorry, in fact you'll be hooked, I guarantee it. You will also fall in love with The Dolly Pos as well. More fun that anyone can expect, they really are the real deal, no faking it, just making it. They’re the best act of this kind west of  Vegas, in fact... Vegas, look out, there is a new band around that will take all others to task!
