My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult

Sinister Whisperz: Wax Trax Years (1987-1991)

Review by Gary Hill

This CD is composed of a bunch of remixes and one unreleased track from My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult. I’ve always liked this band in theory, but never really heard them. Mind you, in a way, I still haven’t because these are remixes, but I love the dark blend of dance music with industrial and Gothic. While there’s not a lot of variety here, it really doesn’t matter because this is all very entertaining stuff.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2010  Volume 5 at lulu.com/strangesound.

Track by Track Review
And This is What the Devil Does (Fade To Blacklight Mix)

Welcome to the club – that is, the club in hell. This is house music, but it’s a dark house with spooky things around the corners. It’s a cool tune.

Burning Dirt (the Hand That Bleedz Mix)
Somehow, this reminds me a little of Hawkwind. It’s in keeping with the opening track, but not like a carbon copy and there is a discernable space rock vibe at times.
Do U Fear (For Your Child?) (Klub Hell Mix)
Another house mix, I love the little kid’s voice with a twang saying “straight outta hell.” This is quite tasty. It is, perhaps, more pure dance music than the other tracks so far.
Nervous Xians (Le Carnical Mix)
While this is at its core the same as the other music here, it doesn’t feel redundant or “samey.”
The Days of Swine & Roses (The Puppet Mix)
I like this one a lot. There are bits of old science fiction movie sounds in the mix and other parts make me think of Art of Noise. This is not a huge change, but it’s just very cool.
These Remains (Tranzlucious Mix)
There are some cool melodies to this, calling to mind Native American music at times. Beyond that, it’s sort of stripped down, but very cool industrial jam.
Shock of Point 6 (Forbidden Saints Mix)
While this isn’t a huge change, it turns into a more rocking motif later in the track. This is still in no danger of outwearing its welcome in terms of the formula.
A Daisy Chain 4 Satan (4 Ever & Ever Mix)
More of a straight dance tune, there is, nonetheless, a bit of Hawkwind vibe on this one, too. The vocals bring in some real punk rock, too. It’s a cool tune that’s one of my favorites on show. It’s arguably the most “different” track here, too. There’s an Arabic sounding vocal bit later.
Ride the Mindway (Acideater Mix)
This dance mix really makes me think of Art of Noise. It’s a cool one, but now the formula is beginning to wear a little thin. That said, the section later has a strangely compelling and frightening element to it.
Kooler Than Jesus (AC/DC Dog Mix)
There’s a cool rubbery rhythmic element here and I like this remix a lot.
Leathersex (All Tied Up Mix)
As the title suggests, this is a sex-based cut. The arrangement is suitably hot and sweaty and this is one of my favorite tracks on show, not because of the subject matter, but rather in spite of it. This really has a killer groove to it.
A Girl Doesn't Get Killed By a Make-Believe Lover... Cuz It's Hot (Demon Seed Mix)
The formula has gotten tired on this one. If this had been delivered at any earlier portion of the disc it would have seemed strong, but by now it just seems redundant.
Satana Rising
This cut is an unreleased track and it’s more Goth meets techno/industrial. It’s a killer number with some great sounds. It’s one of the best on show here.
