Derek Sherinian

Interviewed by Gary Hill
Interview with Derek Sherinian From 2009
MSJ: It’s been a while since we chatted can you catch us up on what’s been going on in your world?
I just built a new studio at my house that I am very excited about. Planet X has reunited with Tony MacAlpine and we will be making a new record in 2010.
MSJ: Do you think that downloading of music is a help or hindrance to the careers of musicians? It’s been said by the major labels that it’s essentially the heart of all the problems they are having in terms of lower sales? Would you agree?
Downloading has killed the record business as we knew it.  What has happened is that each time an artist releases a record and the sales decrease, the record company chisels the artist advance for the next record accordingly. It then gets to a point where the artist is not covering his cost to make the record.

I am seriously going to explore the option of bypassing record companies, and using viral marketing for my future releases.
MSJ: In a related question how do you feel about fans recording shows and trading them?
Again, they are stealing from the artist.
MSJ: If you were to put together your ultimate band, who would be in it?
Edward Van Halen- Guitar
Tony Franklin- Bass
Simon Phillips- Drums
And Me on Keys
MSJ: What was the last CD you bought, or what have you been listening to lately?
I have been listening to my Allan Holdsworth collection a lot lately.
MSJ: What about the last concert you attended for your enjoyment?
The last concert that I attended was the Van Halen reunion two years ago.
MSJ: Finally, are there any closing thoughts you’d like to get out there?
Look for a new Derek Sherinian solo record and a new Planet X record in 2010.
MSJ: This interview is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2009  Volume 6 at lulu.com/strangesound.
