Esquire

Interviewed by Gary Hill
Interview with Nikki Squire of Esquire from 2016
MSJ:
Can you catch the readers up on the history of your involvement in music – both individually and as a band?
Nigel McLaren and I met in 1982 - a meeting that was set to change the course of my life.  I was to form a band with Nigel named "Esquire." From then on Nigel and I would write together and work with other musicians…

Although I had written, sung and contributed on certain songs with Chris Squire, to whom I was married, there had never been the time to dedicate myself to music completely, but now Esquire was set to happen…  Three albums have since been released: Esquire our debut, then Coming Home and finally Esquire 111 No Spare Planet.

MSJ:
If you weren't involved in music what do you think you'd be doing?

I'd be an environmentalist…

MSJ: Who would you see as your musical influences?
CSNY, Beatles, David Bowie, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Mingus, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, Jimi Hendrix
MSJ:
What's ahead for you?
I’ll Let you know after all this political madness…
MSJ: I know many artists hate to have their music pigeonholed or labeled, but how would you describe your music?
progressive rock, classic rock, contemporary rock…
MSJ: Are there musicians with whom you would like to play with in the future?
Only time will tell…
MSJ: Do you think that illegal downloading or streaming of music is a help or hindrance to the careers of musicians?
If illegal download continues, it just makes it difficult for artists to make music and generate an income, and therefore be able to make more music, so I would regard it as a hindrance…
MSJ: If you were to put together your ultimate band (a band you'd like to hear or catch live), who would be in it and why?
All of the people who are my influences…
MSJ: If you were in charge of assembling a music festival and wanted it to be the ultimate one from your point of view who would be playing?
Prince…
MSJ: What was the last CD you bought and/or what have you been listening to lately?
No Spare Planet
MSJ:
Have you read any good books lately?
Touched by the Dragon’s Breath by Michael Harrington…
MSJ:
What about the last concert you attended for your enjoyment?
"La Traviata"…
MSJ:
Do you have a musical “guilty pleasure?”
Eminem…
MSJ: What has been your biggest Spinal Tap moment?
Asked Stevie Wonder's driver if he ever drives himself..Baah!...
MSJ: If you could sit down to dinner with any three people, living or dead, for food and conversation, with whom would you be dining?
I would be dining with Chris Squire, Nigel McLaren and Mark Wallis…
MSJ: What would be on the menu?
Nut Roast!..
MSJ: Are there any closing thoughts you would like to get out there?
There truly is no spare planet

Peace and Love
