Analog Missionary

Interviewed by Gary Hill
Interview with The Mark of Analog Missionary from 2006

MSJ: This interview is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2006 Volume 5 at lulu.com/strangesound.

Can you catch the readers up on the history of the band?
Tony and Kevin have collaborated musically for many years. Eventually they were joined by Anstrom, and the true style of AM coalesced. I joined 4 years ago at which point we started touring more widely across the US. 2 full albums have been released, and are available on the AM website or iTunes; a third is in the works.
MSJ: I know that musicians don't care to have their music pigeonholed, but how would you describe it?
We are influenced by several forms of rock music, genre-wise; especially progressive, ambient, ethereal. If we had to describe our style, we like to refer to it as atmospheric/cinematic art-rock, or 'maximalism.'
MSJ: Who do you see as your musical influences (both personally and as a band)?
We respect innovative/virtuosic groups like Rush, Yes, and King Crimson, but also especially enjoy traditional middle-eastern music, and ethereal singers like Kate Bush, Cocteau Twins, etc...
MSJ: Are there musicians out there with whom you would like to work?
Daniel Lanois, Peter Gabriel, any members of Yes or King Crimson or Rush, etc.
MSJ: Do you see the downloading of music as a help or hindrance to artists?
DL's certainly afford a wider scope of exposure, and though paid DL's appear to be gaining popularity most folks still want a physical CD for the full listening experience, we find. So we don't mind making our material available for DL. It's nice to have the option, but we're not too concerned either way.
MSJ: In a related question what do you think about fans taping and trading live shows?
Not much we can do about taping/trading- don't really worry about it too much. A recording will never quite be the same as attending the show, but we don't mind making live tracks available occasionally- not everyone can make it to a show.
MSJ: What is up next for you guys?
Just finished touring and are in the studio working on album number 3. Then we tour again. Film more videos. Compose more soundtracks. Wash, rinse, repeat...
MSJ: What was the last CD you bought and/or what have you been listening to lately?
Dredg - Catch Without Arms. Been viewing several Siouxsie and the Banshees DVDs lately.
MSJ: What was the last concert you attended?
Muse
MSJ: If you could have dinner with any three musicians from all time - who would be your dinner companions?
Any who enjoy exotic cuisine!
MSJ: What has been your biggest Spinal Tap moment?
I spontaneously combusted after a show in New Orleans. I got better, though.
MSJ: Finally any thing you'd like to add for the readers?
Thanks for perusing! Do stop by the site if you're so inclined, we'd love to hear from you- we try to stay pretty active on the web lately.
