The Dicks

The Dicks from Texas DVD

Review by Gary Hill

You might have never heard of this band. I hadn’t heard of them before this video. The group came into being in 1980. The origin of the group was Austin, Texas. That’s probably not a place you are likely to associate with punk rock, but that’s the style in which these guys played. While many music fans have not heard of these guys, they were considered to be a big influence on the hardcore punk scene.

This documentary showcases the story of The Dicks. The documentary is a great punk video because it’s about as lo-fi as you can get. This will not be considered high art, either. That sort of aesthetic really serves the punk rock concept well. One thing that’s clear about this video (which tells the story in the usual way – video clips with interviews and narration) this is a documentary about a band that refused to “sell out.” That very fact might be a badge of honor amongst the fans, but it’s probably also the reason a lot of people haven’t heard of them. If you want to check out a glimpse into the punk rock scene, this is recommended. I’d say it’s a definite “must buy” for fans of the band. The thing is, I almost think that in some ways this video would be a better glimpse into the scene than a documentary about a band one is familiar with. That’s because without any prior knowledge or history of the group, it is all drawn across eyes that are completely open. With a more familiar act, there are a lot of things that are understood going into the process.
