Electric Light Orchestra

Out of the Blue - Live at Wembley DVD

Review by Gary Hill

I know a lot of people have slagged on Electric Light Orchestra for being too polished and too pop oriented. Well, count me out of that group. I love the band. Mind you, I don’t love everything they’ve done, but I do love a lot of it. Well, this DVD features a show from them in the days of Out of the Blue. For some that represents the real core of the polished pop era. I maintain that they were still a prog band then. Mind you, they were an AOR, pop oriented band. They were also great. This release is highly recommended in my book, but not without its problems. It’s a charity concert and the band was introduced by Tony Curtis (a cool touch if you ask me). Their performance is tight and this really shows that these guys were very talented. The video and audio were top notch for the time. That said, it’s not up to modern standards, but still very good. I’m not crazy about some of the video editing (namely the borders around a lot of the shots). This is also too short. It weighs in at just about exactly an hour with some of that time taken up with things other than performance. Still, for those of us who never got to catch them live in that period, this is highly recommended. For those who did, this has to represent a real chance to relive it. From the opening sci-fi oriented flying saucer thing to the whole live show, this is a real event. I love it.
