David Bowie

The Calm Before the Storm DVD

Review by Gary Hill

I really liked this DVD. That said, I really like the period of Bowie’s career covered here. I mean, I know everyone really loves the Ziggy Stardust era, and that was what made him a superstar, but I came in after the fact. And, I really latched onto albums like Hunky Dory and Space Oddity right off the bat, and loved them. So, the detail that goes into the creation of those albums and analysis is highly appreciated. I have to say, though, it would have been cool for a little detail about Rick Wakeman’s involvement in the song “Space Oddity” because his Mellotron playing is really what makes the song work as well as it does.
