The Grateful Dead

Dawn Of The Dead & The Rise of the San Francisco Underground DVD

Review by Gary Hill

This certainly is at its core about the Grateful Dead, but it’s really about so much more. From the rest of the bands on the San Francisco scene at the time like Jefferson Airplane and Janis Joplin to the Altamont concert and the entire “hippie movement” it’s a big story and it’s told with a lot of great footage and interviews. As opposed to a lot of these documentaries, it includes the real music, too. While I’d highly recommend this, I would say that it tends to run a little long at points.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2012  Volume 3 at lulu.com/strangesound.
