Elvis Costello

Spectacle – Elvis Costello With... Season 2 DVD

Review by Gary Hill

When Elvis Costello emerged in the punk/new wave movement of the 1970s it’s a pretty safe bet that few ever thought he’d become a talk show host. Well, this double DVD set shows it happened. Yes, I know this is the second season of a TV series, but I never saw the series before. It’s an interesting talk show because it’s part conversations and part performances. I’m sure many enjoyed the Bruce Springsteen two parter, but personally, I’ve never been able to take Springsteen – don’t ask me why. His performances have always bugged me so that one left me less than pleased. However, there are plenty of other killer shows here including interviews with Nick Lowe, Bono and the Edge, Sheryl Crowe, Lyle Lovett and more. It’s a safe bet there’s something here for everyone. I wish I’d caught this show when it was on the air. It’s great.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2011  Volume 4 at lulu.com/strangesound.
