Velvet Revolver

Live in Houston DVD

Review by Gary Hill

If you haven’t heard Velvet Revolver, there’s a very good chance you’ve heard some of the members of the band in other projects. Although he has since left the group and they haven’t replaced him yet, singer Scott Weiland (best known for his work in Stone Temple Pilots) was the front man here. Slash, Matt Sorum and Duff McKagan of Guns ‘N’ Roses fame were all in the group. The band was rounded out by rhythm guitarist Dave Kushner.

The performance captured in this DVD includes songs from their debut CD Contraband, but also some Guns ‘N’ Roses and Stone Temple Pilot songs. It’s a good live document and is recommended for fans of Velvet Revolver or either of the bands from which it sprang. Both audio and video quality are good, but there is a bit of annoyance in that interview clips are interspersed among the concert footage.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2010  Volume 6 at lulu.com/strangesound.
