Earth Wind and Fire

Live in Japan DVD

Review by Gary Hill

This new DVD from Earth Wind and Fire captures the band in a 1990 performance. It was a time where the band were trying to merge their classic sound with more modern R & B and hip hop. That blending was often great, but sometimes a bit misguided. That discontinuity is reflected a bit in this performance – but only in a few places. More than anything else we get a killer show from a band who really deserves the title “classic” as much as just about anyone else. This is a powerhouse concert and the video and audio are both quite good. As a bonus they have included most of the show as an audio CD so you can enjoy it even away from a DVD player. I wish more music DVD’s were released that way.
