Jethro Tull

Jack In The Green - Live In Germany

Review by Greg Olma

I have been a fan of Jetro Tull since 11/8/84. I remember it vividly because that was the first time I saw them live and I have been hooked ever since. You see, Tull is a band that is made for the stage. Although their records are great, live is where all the magic comes together. A Jethro Tull show is not just a concert, it is an experience and that experience will stay with you for the rest of your life.

Eagle Vision has been putting out some great DVDs of past performances (covering many artists) and here they have released another winner. This DVD captures a number of German performances starting with 1970 and moving through to 1993. The majority of this release is from the '80's but the other twi decades are represented. The five parts are:

Rockpop In Concert 1982: This part of the DVD is the most extensive. The band is out promoting their Broadsword And The Beast record although only “Pussy Willow” is performed (or that is all they released here – this is not the full performance). Ian Anderson was in a transitional phase by having a little of a minstrel outfit crossed with a camouflage shirt.

Rocksummer 1986: The only song showcased here from this show is the Tull classic “Hunting Girl." The footage is just average with the lights almost washing out some of the shots but the choice of song makes up for that.

Out In The Green 1986: You can’t loose by starting this part off with “Thick As A Brick." The filming is much better than the Rocksummer footage. The filming and lighting on this one really gives you a “being there” feel. “Black Sunday” from A is also a nice inclusion.

Live 1993: The setting here looks a bit dinner theater-ish. The performance of “My Sunday Feeling” and “So Much Trouble” are spot on but the setting is a bit off.

Beat-Club 1970 – 1971: I don’t know why they give this 2 years because they look like they happened at the same time. Either way, it’s great to finally have this material.

Well, there you have it; a good collection of Jethro Tull performances from 3 decades. If you are like me, you will want this DVD. My only complaints are that there are no extras and I wish these shows were complete. That being said, I wouldn’t want to be without these video treasures.
