Culture Club

Live In Sydney DVD

Review by Gary Hill

Alright, alright, I know - a lot of you are probably scratching your heads and saying, "MSJ is covering Culture Club?" Well, the truth is, while I'm definitely a prog and metal head, I can appreciate good pop music and that's exactly what Culture Club always did. While I've never followed the band, I've certainly enjoyed their radio hits over the years. It's interesting to get to see a video of them performing in their hey day. They really put on a great show. One thing that's quite obvious is the difference between the straight ahead pop acts of that time and the ones that are around today. For one thing, how many of today's groups do you think go out there and actually perform? Well, Culture Club were actually playing and singing - no lip-synching to a pre-recorded track here. Still they managed to put in a full on stage production at the same time. The sound and video production here are solid, but not state of the art. Don't get me wrong; you aren't going to really notice that production because there aren't any problems. This one is definitely up there with most live videos you see out there - it just doesn't surpass. The other thing I should mention is that if anything after viewing this show I actually have more respect for the band and appreciate their music more than I did before. That says something. These guys really were putting out a solid set of music in those days and it's good that it got captured for us to watch over and over again. The DVD also includes a short featurette biography that includes a lot of interesting video footage and interviews. This one is a no-brainer for hardcore fans of the band, but for those who like myself are on the definite periphery, I'd still recommend it.
