Rob Barteletti’s Shakers' Session

7th Annual Shakers’ Ball – Portland, Oregon, March 2012

Review by Larry Toering

The Shakers Ball is a benefit for Parkinson's disease with donations going to the Brian Grant Foundation. This was the 7th annual concert held by the project’s brainchild Rob Barteletti, with a few bands and an assortment of iconic northwest singers, each adding unique presence to Barteletti's songs written for the Shakers' Sessions CD. The songs are great and so were the performances, each and every one of them. It was a pretty packed house for the most part, and all of the entertainers were relaxed yet pumped for the event. What a spectacular evening it was. A blast was had by all.

Things got underway rather quickly and off we were to enjoy some fantastic music with no time to spare. After the first band I became a little more familiarized with the artists on display, as Ian Moore proceeded to rip the theater in half with his massively energetic performance. I mean this guy is something of a treat to watch, and I found myself punching the air several times over his infectious delivery. He was so good I had to have a word with him and find out just where and what he's been up to, because before the CD he was completely unknown to me. I'm just glad I can say that is no longer the case.

After a performance like that it's hard to know what can happen next, but one killer singer after another proceeded to follow. This took the shape of several of them standing out and worth noting. Nick Peets who sang “Mr. Heartache,” and Steve Wilkinson's performance of “Bird On A Wing” in particular were fantastic. Those are two artists from whom I’m looking forward to hearing more. There were other great moments as well, featuring Ken DeRoche, and a grand showing from Rob Stroupe and the Blame. Stroup himself did the production honors on the CD, and what a fine show they put on as well. The whole night wouldn't be a reality if it weren't for the man of the hour who wrote all of the songs. Barteletti himself who treated us to the last song of the night called “Her Man, Her Love, Her Friend.”

The fight for Parkinson's disease is a non stop effort, and this being the seventh event held by Barteletti, it's unknown whether or not there will be another one of these great events to support this vital cause. One thing that can be expected, if it does get repeated another time, is nothing but first class musicians and friends involved. The CD Shakers Sessions can be purchased at all 39 Burgerville locations, and can also be heard at Barteletti's website. This is a great quality release that was performed by most of the singers on it, as the Ball that evening. Do the cause a favor and pick up a copy of the disc with the songs this show was built around. It was my privilege to attend the event and I would repeat it anytime.
