Dr. Compressor

Doctor’s Orders

Review by Gary Hill

This set is intriguing. It has a lot of groove built into it. Space music, jazz and a lot more are part of the equation. Perhaps it’s not exactly prog rock, but it is progressive, artsy music. It’s also cool.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2016  Volume 2 at lulu.com/strangesound.

Track by Track Review
I

Space music, groove sounds and more merge on this cool instrumental. It has a lot of soul and funk in the mix, but also is trippy. I suppose fusion would be a good description in some ways.

II
There is even more jazz built into this beast. It’s a cool tune that’s part trippy space music and part fusion. There are also some hints of hip hop here.
III
Another cool slab of trippy instrumental music, there are definitely bits of prog built into this thing. I can hear elements here that call to mind Pink Floyd just a little. This is one of my favorites here, really.
IV
Another cool trippy instrumental groove, there isn’t a huge difference here, but this does have quite a bit of jazz in the mix.
V
Much more rhythmic in nature, in some ways this makes me think of something that Tony Levin might do. It’s got a groove, but it’s very artsy, too.
VI
This one is a lot like the previous one, but it’s perhaps more spacey.
VII
Somehow this makes me think of Laurie Anderson a bit. It’s trippy and rhythmic at the same time. There is also some jazz in the mix.
VIII
More trippy sounds make up this cool piece. It’s perhaps a bit more jazzy than some of the rest.
