EdTang and the Chops

EdTang and the Chops EP

Review by Gary Hill

Roots rock and Americana are the basic styles represented here. This rocking disc is cool stuff. There is a lot music like this out there, and this doesn’t really break any molds. It just manages to entertain quite well. It’s got some smoking hot music in the course of its running time.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2014  Volume 3 at lulu.com/strangesound.

Track by Track Review
When Death Should Find Us

This is energized, but sort of mid-tempo. The harmonica is a nice touch. It’s got a great classic sound that’s still modern at the same time. This is fun stuff.

Willy Loman
I love the guitar that dances around the outside of this arrangement. The whole tune is a classy one. The mix of modern and classic sounds is still intact. This is more like a powered up ballad in a lot of ways, though.
Brothers in the Way Back
There is quite a bit of country in this number. It’s a real roots rock, Americana kind of number. There is some punk in the mix, too, but mostly in the raw, rather DIY attitude. This is catchy and fun.
A Lapsed Catholic
We get more of a mainstream rock approach here. This is more modern than some of the rest. It also lands near the mellower end of the spectrum.
Leaving of Liverpool
There’s folk music motif here. It’s energetic and a little raw. It’s got Celtic leanings to it. This reminds me of some of the more stripped back sounds from some of the Celtic punk bands out there.
