Casting Shadows

Review by Gary Hill

This is an intriguing outfit. Take Brand X bassist/keyboardist Percy Jones. Add in Neil Citron on guitar. Round the whole thing out by adding in Walter Garces of The Electric Prunes to handle the percussion end of the festivities. Now, get that group of guys playing some killer fusion based instrumental progressive rock. You’ll quickly understand that this is an album not to be missed.

Track by Track Review
BBA

This is fiery fusion a bit like a cross between Joe Satriani and Liquid Tension Experiment. It’s a real smoker and a great way to start the set off in style.

Sex Me Up
There’s a bit of a Southern rock vibe to this one, but it’s still got plenty of fusion built into it.
Hair of the Dog
We get another smoking hot hunk of fusion in this number. It has plenty of groove too, though. There are some interesting changes and the cut really has a funky side to it. I love the mellower movement later. In many ways, this is the most dynamic track to this point on the set.
Let Em Drown
The overall plan isn’t changed here, but this hard edged fusion jam is its own unique track. It’s another smoking slab of sound. The guitar on this one is particularly worth mentioning.
Ballad of Wealth
While one might not think of this as a ballad in the classic sense, it’s mellower and more melodic. It’s a great piece of music.
Man in the Middle
Although there’s a rubbery groove to this, the keyboards also lend a bit of a spacey air to the cut. There’s some exceptionally cool bass work on this and some of those keys are especially intriguing, too.
Groove Snake
Here’s a harder edged rocker that’s very cool. It is still firmly living in the world of fusion, but it has more crunch on-board. They take us out on a weird tangent here and there along the ride.
The One Percenters
We get another tasty hunk of fusion on this number. There aren’t any huge changes, but the ride is a lot of fun.
