Albert Collins

Live At Montreux 1992

Review by Eric Meli

I remember seeing Albert Collins play at Rockford's On The Waterfront  in  September of 1993, it was one of the most energetic shows I've seen. You couldn't tell that in a litte more than a month he would pass away from throat cancer -  he sounded that good.

This CD is from a show he did on March 4 1992. While some tracks (along with the Rockford and Peoria IL shows in '93) are on another live CD  called "Live 92-93," if you already own that one don't worry the tracks aren't all the same and this CD is another worthy one to add to your collection.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2008  Volume 2 at lulu.com/strangesound.

Track by Track Review
Iceman
The show's opener starts right off with a song that was his nickname, and this gives you insight into why he was saddled with that name.
Honey Hush
I love the songs he did covers of. This one was originally done by Big Joe Turner, and has lots of attitude. Collins had the prowess to pull it off fine.
Lights Are On (But Nobody's Home)
This slow blues number clocks in at 11 minutes, and with Collins giving it his all and more, it's no wonder he was also called "the master of the telecaster."
If You Love Me Like You Say
Another cut that always gets the crowd moving, Collins and his band are really tight on this track.
Too Many Dirty Dishes
This is another slow track about a cheating woman. This song also showcases Collins' backing musicians and his talking guitar.
Put The Shoe On The Other Foot
Collins really shows off his skills on this danceable song with a message about seeing things differently by walking in another man's shoes.
Frosty
The CD's closing track is a  seven minute instrumental that jams all the way through with Collins' horn section keeping a tight rhythm while the Iceman plays his heart out.
